Today is a difficult day for all postal workers and CUPW members. Last night, we learned that one of our members in Toronto has died of COVID-19. I know I speak for all CUPW members when I share my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the member’s family, friends, and coworkers, and respect their privacy during this difficult time.
Canada Post has advised the Union that they are respecting all Toronto Public Health guidelines, but we will continue to gather information and take all necessary actions to make sure Canada Post is prioritizing the health and safety of members. We will accept nothing less.
A COVID-19 outbreak was declared last week at the South Central Letter Processing Plant where the deceased member worked. Thirteen members tested positive over a 14-day period which triggered rapid testing at the facility. CUPW encourages all members to get tested.
For over a year, postal workers and all CUPW members in every community across the country have been providing an invaluable service to all. We have helped people stay home and stay safe. It’s a job we are proud to do, but we also expect our employer, health authorities, and governments to do what is necessary to keep us safe from the virus.
Take Action to Protect Your Health – and Your Co-Workers
We must continue to be vigilant to fight this virus. Wear your masks, continue to practice physical distancing, and follow guidelines from public health. I urge members to notify your shop steward or Health and Safety representative if you feel that safe work practices aren’t being followed and you feel unsafe. If you are feeling unwell or have any COVID-19 symptoms, including mild ones, please contact your local public health unit and follow their directives.
The Union will continue to fight for the health and safety of all members. Vaccination of CUPW members is a top priority for us and we’ve been vocal about the need for postal workers to be included in the second phase of vaccinations. We all deserve to be protected.
Stay safe!
In solidarity,
Jan Simpson
National President CUPW
