Advance Shop Steward

This course gives experienced Stewards an opportunity to assess their strengths and work on the areas they want to improve. Participants review grievance investigation basics and practise face-to-face
communications, including meetings with management. Other topics include self care, strategies for shop floor mobilization and recruiting new Stewards, the Duty of Fair Representation, the rights of Temporary Employees and OCRE’s, and the STDP.

  • applicants should have already taken Basic Shop Steward

Social Stewards

This course trains members to be Social Stewards. Social Stewards are resource people who assist co-workers experiencing personal problems. They listen to members, help them identify their concerns and find solutions, and refer them to appropriate resources. This course familiarizes participants with a Social Steward’s role and responsibilities. Participants will explore ways to approach workplace problems, learn how to support members and how to gather and share information on the resources available to members.

These courses provide an opportunity for union activists to collectively analyze and work on the challenges involved in representing and mobilizing the membership.

The courses provide an opportunity for newer union activists to hone their skills and for long time leaders to reenergize.

The deadline for registration is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023. (NO EXCEPTIONS) Please ensure your applications are in by the date, any application received after the deadline will not be considered. Space is limited to 20 participants per class (10 per region).

To be considered, all applications must be signed and submitted by the Secretary Treasurer, President, or Vice-President. Once the Local signs applications, the Local must submit all signed and completed
applications directly to Regional Office. Applications can be submitted by mail to CUPW Pacific Region, 999 Carnarvon Street, New Westminster, B.C. V3M1G2 or by fax to (604) 525-6821.

As this course is offered under the PEL provisions of our Collective Agreement, all costs including loss of
wages, transportation and meals will be paid by National Union.

Interested members should be made aware that there will be some evening sessions involved and that all
sessions of the course are mandatory, including those required by the CLC Winter School.
