Local Executives and shop stewards are the backbone of our Union, and these folks don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Recently, I had the honour of moving motions at the National Executive Board to give life-time memberships to two retired members of the Pacific Region, acknowledging their tireless work on behalf of the CUPW membership.
Elaine Mclean was the President of the Powell River local. Elaine was a great activist and always ensured the voices of small locals were heard. I was always impressed by her knowledge of all the issues facing postal workers, and I know she made sure to leave the local in great hands.
Anthony Holzer was the long standing Secretary-Treasurer of the Fraser Valley West local, and was also the elected member from the Pacific Region as a National Trustee. In his last term on the Board of Trustees he served as Chair. I had the pleasure of working with Anthony on the Fraser Valley West local Executive and will miss his extreme knowledge around the finances of the Union. I know that he will always be there to answer my questions, even in retirement. For that I’m eternally grateful.
I also want to mention Sue Chappelle from the Golden local. Though she hasn’t retired yet, Sue just stepped back as local president after 22 years, as she gets ready for her retirement. Sue is mentoring a new Executive to continue on the great work of that local. Sue and I have been friends for over 20 years and first met at an area council meeting
when I was President of the Prince George local. I will miss Sue’s laughter and friendship the most. I wish “Golden” Sue {as she is affectionately known} the best in this next phase of her working life at the post office, and thank her for all her hard work on behalf of her local.
I would like to finish with a personal thanks to all of you for the work you do every day, and look forward to working and/or meeting with you soon.
Stay safe, keep up the great work and know that you are appreciated!
In Solidarity,
Coleen Jones
National Director
